ANSI accreditation signifies that the procedures used by a standards development organization meet the requirements of the Institute in terms of:
- Openness
- Balance
- Consensus
- and proper process
ANSI also defines specific standards as the American National Standards or ANS (American National Standards).
Voluntary consensus standards accelerate market acceptance of products while clarifying how to enhance the safety of these products to protect consumers.
The American National Standard process includes:
- Consensus by group open to representatives of all interested parties
- Done through a review or review from the public and ask for comments on the standard draft
- Consideration and response to incoming comments
- Gathering of multiple inputs on proposed changes, which meet the same consensus requirements into draft standards
- Availability of appeals by any participant stating that there were principles that were not adhered to during the standard development process.
